Seabirds and Whales of Louisiana |
The Louisiana Ornithological Society (LOS) sponsors daylong expeditions starting from Port Fourchon, LA, to search the deep waters off the mouth of the Mississippi River for seabirds, whales, and dolphins. In many ways these have been voyages of discovery; scientific knowledge of the seabirds of the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana is limited and fragmentary. If you want to know more about this, here are links.

Seabirds. We've seen over a dozen species of birds not normally found on or near land in Louisiana, including some first records for the state. |

Whales and dolphins. The Gulf of Mexico isn't dense with mammals, but it hosts a remarkable diversity of cetacean species. Here are some we've seen. |
| Trip lists. What are the chances of seeing Red-billed Tropicbird, Sperm Whale, or some other sought-after species on these trips? Judge for yourself from these listings. | |

Do you want to go on one of these trips? Details of how to sign up and what the trips are like can be found on the Pelagic Page on the Louisiana Ornithological Society web site. |
